Travis held his breath, wondering what was in store for him now.

“Andrea’s not doing so well, so I’m driving her into town for a checkup. I don’t know how long we’ll be. Do you think you could keep everything under control until I get back?”

Travis was taken aback. “Uh…of course. You can count on me.”

“Hunter knows what to do and so do the others, but I would feel better if someone was in charge. There’s a list on the kitchen counter of what needs special attention today, okay? Tell the other guys what’s going on. I would appreciate it, Trav.” Bill placed a hand on Travis’s shoulder, a strange look in his eyes. “You know Hunter’s dad drowned in that river,” he stated from out of nowhere.

“What?” Travis’s face dropped, realizing what he must’ve put Hunter through. “When?”

“When Hunter was just a boy. A few cows wandered off just like what happened today, but it was the spring and we had a lot of flooding that year. The river was swollen and angry. It was further downstream where the river stretches pretty wide. Hunter never knew his father being he was so young and all.”

“Jesus, that’s awful.” No wonder he overreacted to his prank. He felt two inches tall.

Bill exhaled. “I’ve got to get ready and so do you. Get a hot shower, but a quick one. These cows don’t milk themselves.” Bill started toward the house, yelling over his left shoulder. “Thanks. See you this afternoon”

Travis gazed in the direction of Hunter’s cottage, a feeling of guilt overtaking him. The story of his father’s drowning tugged at his heartstrings. He was angry with himself for playing such a childish prank. Maybe Hunter’s right. Maybe I am an asshole.
